We work closely with the wider dental community to give advice on the management and timing of orthodontic care.
Honest expert advice achieves the best results and sometimes avoids the need for braces. We work with Community Dental Clinics, and regional specialists in gum health, facial surgery and oral health. We are an accredited ACC provider and have a close relationship with the dental team at Nelson Marlborough District Health Board.
We’re a proud member of the Nelson branch of the New Zealand Dental Association.
TASMAN RUGBY UNION
Every year Nelson Orthodontics sponsors a mouthguard for each junior rugby player in the Tasman region.
Each year thousands of children are treated for dental injuries which could have been prevented or minimised, if they had been wearing a protective mouthguard. We strongly advocate that all participants in a sport that carries a risk of contact to the face should wear a mouthguard.
A mouthguard helps absorb the shock experienced by a blow to the face, which might otherwise result in an injury to the mouth or jaw and is proven to reduce concussion.
We are proud sponsors of the mighty Tasman Mako rugby team, protecting the smiles of the team with the most bite in New Zealand!
In 2017 we celebrated 10 years of donating mouthguards to junior rugby players across Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough - that’s now a total of over 60,000 mouthguards protecting the smiles of the next generation of might Mako!
We welcome applications from our existing or previous youth patients for assistance with their sporting pursuits – each year we have some funding set aside to sponsor our up-and-coming Nelson sports people to achieve great things.
OTHER COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES
Nelson Orthodontics promotes Dental health in children which enable them to access activities by sponsoring:
The Wish For A Smile Trust is a public health initiative of the New Zealand Association of Orthodontists (NZAO).
The Trust aims to make specialist orthodontic treatment available to young New Zealanders who would otherwise be unable to access orthodontic care.
Nelson Orthodontics is proud to support this initiative to treat selected children within the Nelson Tasman community who are unable to access orthodontic care because of financial hardship and severe malocclusion (misalignment).
Promoting research and education in orthodontic health
Dr Andrew Marriott is a Trustee and founding member of The Foundation for Orthodontic Research and Education NZAO Charitable Trust (FORENZAO). The Trust was set up in 2005 to promote and encourage research into orthodontic advancement. Specifically, the Trust
- funds scientific and clinical research exploring methods for improved orthodontic care
- encourages and supports scientific and clinical research and specialist orthodontic health care
- supports post-graduate education associated with the discipline of orthodontics within New Zealand, including the support of students and lecturers involved in such education
- promotes education about orthodontic health care in the community generally
- assists movements, groups and organisations endeavouring to support and promote these purposes.
FORENZAO assists in funding projects run by the Education and Research Development Group (ERDG) of the NZAO. FORENZAO gathers funds for the ERDG through NZAO member contributions and sponsorship from related orthodontic businesses.
