Q. What is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a specialist dentist who has had an additional three years of training and thousands of hours of experience to be an expert at what they do. Your family dentist is like your family GP doctor; an orthodontist is like a specialist your doctor refers you to if you have something that requires expert knowledge and treatment.

Q. Do you just fit braces?

No, as specialist orthodontists, we recommend and implement the best orthodontic treatment for every patient. During your first appointment, your orthodontist will discuss all your options and select the one that best suits you.

Q. Do I need a referral to see you?

Often your dentist will recommend you come and see us however you are most welcome to call to arrange a new patient appointment without a referral.

Q. At what age does my child need to see an orthodontist?

We recommend an initial assessment around age 9 to check the growth and development of the jaw and teeth. Most orthodontic treatment starts at 13-14 years of age.

Q. Am I too old for Orthodontic treatment?

No, the good news is you are never too young or too old to come and have a chat with a friendly Orthodontists about the best way to get that healthy, confident smile.

Q. What are the different braces options?

There are two different options, Metal braces, with lots of colour options or ceramic braces, which are tooth coloured and blend into your teeth for a more subtle look. During your consultation appointment, your Orthodontist will discuss all treatment options and help you pick the one that best suits you.

Q. What are braces?

Braces are an Orthodontic appliance that's bonded to the tooth surface to correct crowded and misaligned teeth.

Q. What are aligners?

Aligners are a series of tight-fitting custom-made, very thin, clear mouthguards that click on the teeth. Invisalign aligners are made with a flexible material making is easy to put them on and off. They are worn all of the time apart from when brushing and eating. You can leave them on when drinking cold water.

Q. What is the best treatment option?

This varies depending on what orthodontic issue(s) are being corrected as well as an individual patient's circumstances. Only a qualified orthodontist can offer the full range of orthodontic treatments and expert advice to recommend the best solution for your unique circumstances.

Q. Do I need to have teeth removed?

Our preference to treat without the removal of teeth. Occasionally extractions are necessary as part of some orthodontic plans. An expert Orthodontist is certainly the right person to give you this kind of specialist advice.

Q. How much does it cost for treatment?

The cost varies case- by- case and depends on a patient’s needs. The first consultation costs $90. Treatment options and costs will be discussed during your consultation appointment.

Q. Do you have payment options?

Yes, we require a deposit when the braces are fitted and offer a payment plan that spread across the duration of your treatment. Another alternative is quarterly credit card payments. Speak to our friendly team to discuss the best payment option for you.

Q. How long does it take to place the braces?

Usual fitting appointments are 80 minutes.

Q. Does it hurt?

You may feel some discomfort for the first few days after; we recommend mild pain relief and a soft food diet.

Q. How often do I need to visit the clinic during treatment?

Usually once every 6-8 weeks.

Q. What happens if something does break?

Use the orthodontic wax we give you to cover any sharp spots and give us a call, we will arrange for you to come in for an appointment

Q. How long do I need to have braces on for?

Treatment time varies from patient to patient but usually between 18 months and two years

Q. What happens when I get the braces off?

You will need to wear your retainers to hold your teeth in place.This is to ensure your teeth are kept straight in their new position.

Q. Do I still need my dental check up's if I have braces?

Yes, please stick to you your normal oral health program while you are having treatment.

Q. Can I continue to play sports with braces?

Absolutely, but we recommend that you wear a mouthguard. As sponsors of the Tasman Mako, our team are experts at fitting comfortable, high-performance mouthguards.

Q. How does your diet change with braces?

You do need to be careful of some foods as anything hard or sticky could break your brackets.

Q. Does a Parent or Guardian have to come to my appointments with me?

Not usually unless your Orthodontist has discussed this with you and specifically requested to see them.
